Stephen
Kemp
Baritone
Stephen received his formative musical education through a scholarship to Worksop College where he studied piano, violin, singing and organ, and as a member of the orchestra, choral society and chapel choir. With the chapel choir there were visits to the cathedrals of York, Lincoln, Sheffield and Southwell to sing Evensong and the choral society gave concerts at Sheffield Cathedral. The highlight of his five years at Worksop was singing in the Woodard Schools centenary service at Westminster Abbey. It was the school’s Director of Music, John March, that gave Stephen an interest in conducting. Other inspirational conductors that he has sung for are Raymond Lomax and Jeremy Jackman.
Whilst a student in Manchester, Stephen was a member of the University Chorus under Keith Elcombe and Stockport Symphony Orchestra directed by Michael English. Subsequently, whilst working in Cheshire, he sang with St George’s Singers, Stockport Festival Chorus and was a founder member of Amici, taking occasional solo roles with those and other groups. Performances were given in venues around the North West and on Granada Television.
Stephen is pleased to have studied singing with Madelaine Gray, Beth Lomas and Ian Kennedy, and conducting with Gregory Rose and Brian Wright.
Since moving to Jersey at the start of 2002, Stephen has directed the chambers choirs Cantique and Vox Humana. For some years he was an associate member of St Luke’s Church choir and with them enjoyed visits to York, Worcester and St George’s Chapel, Windsor. Since 2017 Stephen has been a member of the music team at St Saviour where he will play, sing or conduct, though rarely all at the same time.
